General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah, who was one time the Chief of Defence Staff when three superior court judges were abducted and murdered has claimed that President Jerry John Rawlings, who was leader of the military junta at the time, denied knowledge of the murder and he believes him.
Speaking on CitiTV recently on the gruesome murder of the three Justices- Kwadwo Adjei Agyepong, Poku Sarkodie and Mrs Cecelia Koranteng-Addow and Samuel Acquah, a retired Major in the Ghana Armed Forces, on June 30, 1989, General Nunoo-Mensah asserted that he met with President Rawlings who was the leader of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) after the murder and he (Rawlings) expressed shock at the accident and described it as a “stupid thing”.
The murder of the judges under the PNDC continues to evoke outrage and condemnation from many even after the conviction of the suspects involved in the murder. Controversy on who really authorized it continues to linger on, with many often pointing accusing fingers at former President Rawlings.
But General Nunoo-Mensah insists that if Rawlings had authorised it, he would have been able to deduce it from his actions and intentions following the murder given that he was close to him and served as Chief of Defence Staff under him.
