A man suspected to be mentally deranged has been shot by a police officer on guard duty at Akyem-Tafo GCB bank branch.
The man was alleged to have attempted to disarm the police officer but was overpowered and shot in the leg.
The incident which occurred Monday afternoon attracted scores of residents to the bank premises.
A staff of the bank who spoke to Adom News’ Kofi Siaw on condition of anonymity said the suspect, who is only known as Ishmael, was in the morning spotted around the bank, threatening to kill anybody who will confront him.
A few hours later, according to the staff, he heard a gunshot outside the bank premises and when they came out they saw Ishmael lying in a pool of blood.
Deputy Eastern Regional Police PRO, Sergeant Francis Gomado confirmed the incident.
He said the man had been taken to the Tafo Government Hospital where he was later referred to the Koforidua Regional Hospital where he is receiving treatment.
He says the police have begun looking into the circumstances that led to the shooting.
