A Tamale circuit court has granted bail to 10 suspects who were arraigned today in connection with an arson attack on the New Patriotic Party’s constituency office at Salaga in the Savannah Region in February 2019.
The 10, who pleaded not guilty, were charged on two counts; conspiracy to commit a crime and causing unlawful damage.
The counsel for the suspects, Mohammed Saibu, pleaded with the court to grant the suspects bail saying they were not dangerous and had permanent places of abode.
He also argued that granting them bail could not interfere with the investigation.
The State Prosecutor, ASP Yahaya Salifu objected to the plea and told the court that the police intend to “conduct an identification parade to avoid innocent persons from being detained and the release of the suspects could interfere in the investigation.”
The Judge, Justice Twumasi overruled his objection and granted the bail condition with two sureties of government workers with salary not less than GH¢2,000.
The Police in the Northern Region took to Salaga in the Savannah Region in the early hours of Tuesday and arrested the suspects over the incident on February 13, 2019.
The office is valued at GH¢300,000 according to the prosecutor.
The violence followed the declaration of Damongo as the capital for the newly created Savannah region.
The police initially arrested seven suspects in Salaga and put them before court but were subsequently granted bail.
Meanwhile, the court has adjourned the case to December 16, 2019.
