The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has described as regrettable the Minority’s petition to the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Stephanie S. Sullivan, demanding investigations by the US Government into the PDS debacle.
The Minority in Parliament has petitioned the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Stephanie S. Sullivan demanding formal investigations by the United States government into the PDS scandal which has rocked the nation.
The petition signed by the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu was delivered at the US Embassy in Accra by the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The Minority, therefore wants to trigger investigations under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of the United States of America especially after “a clearer picture is now emerging that the Akufo-Addo Government stands complicit with top functionaries and cronies neck-deep in the putrescent sleaze.”
A Press Statement issued by the Ranking Member, Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs on the said petition contended that the Akufo-Addo government cannot be trusted to conduct thorough and independent investigations into this scandal of monumental proportions.
But the Information Minister has indicated the petition was needless on the basis that the American government had already expressed its confidence in government’s ability to do a thorough and fair investigation.
“It’s shameful how politics has destroyed us as a nation. This same American government that you despised because you claimed it was setting up a military base in the country, which will attract terrorist attacks and that the American soldiers will be raping our girls for which reason you started various campaigns against that deal has in a short while become so important to you that you have confidence in it to investigate PDS saga."
"This is not the first time. They repeated the same when they petitioned the Securities and Exchange Commission of the US, over the US$2.25 billion bond issue. So, as usual, this will come to naught. They are always suppressing the truth because of politics; destroying our nation in the international arena just because they want to make political capital out of everything.
He added: "We’ll continue to support the investigative agencies to do a good job on the matter. So for me calling out to the American government that they should come and investigate us’ because you do not believe in Ghana, we think is unfortunate.”
The various investigations on all angles are progressing steadily, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah noted, saying at the end of the month-long investigations into the PDS saga, they’ll make every outcome public as promised.
