Late on Friday, the Recording Academy announced its first steps aimed at tackling gender inequality in music.
It is calling on artists to include at least two women in the pool of candidates they hire from, saying "the music industry is at a crossroads and progress won't happen on its own."
A special task force was set up following the 2018 awards, in response to accusations the Grammys are too male and too white.
Out of the 86 Grammy Awards handed out that year, 17 of them went to women or female-fronted bands.
A further US study showed just two percent of music producers and three percent of engineers are women.
Artists including Cardi B, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, John Legend, Keith Urban and Pharrell Williams have signed on to the new inclusion initiative.
"There is no magic bullet to shift a status quo that has existed for centuries, but we see this initiative as an important step," said the task force's Tina Tchen.
