Ugandan police are investigating the disappearance of a South Sudanese tycoon who recently went viral on social media for flaunting his wealth online.
Local Daily Monitor reports Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire to say Lual Malong Jr’s family had filed a report on his disappearance at Kabalagala Police Station.
According to Owoyesigyire, Malong Jr’s family said they had not heard from the tycoon since November 14.
The report says South Sudanese was picked from his hotel room in Kabalagala, a Kampala suburb, by people in military uniform, who arrived in two vehicles.
“We are investigating the circumstances under which he was picked up. His brother reported [the matter] to police. I can confirm he is not in our custody,” the spokesperson said.
Malong Jr grabbed media headlines in Kenya last month for his ostentatious lifestyle.
In an interview with Kenya’s Citizen TV, Malong Jr flaunted his $10,000 shoes and a Rolex watch worth $100,000.
The Ugandan army has since denied that its troops picked the South Sudanese from his hotel.
“I have no information about that individual being held by the UPDF,” Brigadier Richard Karemire said.
