Premier League “agree in principle” to introduce VAR next season

Clubs from the English Premier League on Thursday voted in favour of the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee technology from next season.
The vote came on the back of controversy in the league after Southampton were denied what was later deemed to be a perfect goal as the side sought their second win of the campaign against Watford.
“Premier League clubs have agreed in principle to introduce Video Assistant Referees (VAR) to the competition in the 2019/20 season,” a statement on the league’s website read.
“At a Shareholders’ Meeting today, clubs were provided with an update on the non-live VAR trials being undertaken by the League and Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL) this season.
“Key learnings from VAR’s use in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, and other leagues across the world, were discussed in detail.”
The VAR technology is already in use in other European League including the German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A and the French Ligue 1.
The technology was also used in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
UEFA also announced in September that the VAR will be used in the Champions League from the 2019–20 season.
Premier League shareholders will next meet again in February following Thursday’s talks.
