Two buses collided in Zimbabwe on Wednesday killing 47 people on the Harare-Mutare highway.
Police Spokesman Paul Nyathi confirmed the deaths and said the accident occurred at the 166-kilometre peg along the road between the capital Harare and the southeastern town of Rusape.
The state-run Herald newspaper said on Twitter that pictures from the scene were too graphic to share.
Traffic accidents are common in Zimbabwe, where roads are riddled with potholes due to years of neglect, but the highway where the accident occurred had been recently resurfaced.
Though the cause of the accident has not been established, Zimbabwe citizens on Twitter have urged compatriots to sign a petition demanding for a law that would make it safer on the roads.
The petition singles out seat belts in all public vehicles and tougher penalties for traffic offenders as weighty matters that need to be considered.
