Ghanaians will see a 20% increase in public transport fares beginning Friday, August 8, 2025. The adjustment, announced by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) in collaboration with major transport unions, comes under the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares.
In a joint statement signed by Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, General Secretary, and Alhaji Tanko, Acting National Chairman of the Council, the GRTCC cited three major factors behind the fare hike:
-
Lack of Relief from Previous Fare Cuts – Despite a 15% fare reduction implemented on May 21, 2025, transport operators say the prices of spare parts and essential services have not dropped accordingly.
-
Fuel Levy Impact – A newly introduced GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy has driven fuel prices up by about 8%, significantly raising operating costs for drivers and transport providers.
-
Deteriorating Roads – Poor road conditions have led to increased vehicle maintenance expenses, further burdening operators.
The new 20% fare adjustment will apply to all forms of public transportation, including shared taxis, intra-city "trotro" services, intercity long-distance buses, and haulage vehicles.
“All commercial transport operators and companies are required to comply with the revised fares and display them clearly at all loading terminals,” the statement said.
The Council urged passengers, drivers, and the general public to support the smooth rollout of the new fare structure.
